Tomahawk,
Dillinger Escape Plan, Skeleton Key
@ Irving Plaza, NYC
8/13/02

This
is long.
So Me and my friend got to Irving plaza around 8 to see a HUGE
line wrapping around the block. Luckily we found some freinds
online right near the door. We got in and waited till 9 for Skeleton
Key. The crowd was a mix of hipster music fans, old guys that
probably liked FNM, a few metal meatheads and more then a few
really hot girls ! This was going to be fun Tomahawk were opening
for Tool, an dthis was their night off. But instead of just sitting
around a hotel room, they booked a headlining show with the 'Escape
Plan, and Ipecac label mates Skeleton Key...Fuck yes...Around
9 Skeleton Key came on.
Skeleton
Key - Really Good ! Kind've a mix of Devo, and a less stupid Primus
? Drummer had a kit of drums, pots , buckets, wood, and just stuff..
pretty cool. Had a lot of energy , and seemed to really enjoy
playing. 9:30 They were done . They thanked Tomahawk, and Dillinger..and
the crowd got ready. Inbetween bands Irving Plaza ( which was
nicely air conditioned ) has a screen that comes done in front
of the stage. It plays announcements, and trippy " like your on
acid visuals" .
During
the set up for Dillinger the crowd began to swell..and it was
gonna get nuts. Around 10 Dillinger hit the stage ..LIKE A FUCKING
ATOM BOMB !
The crowd immediatly got pushed to the sides, as MASSIVE pit opened
up in the middle of Irving Plaza, with crazy NYC hardcore kids
dancing like epileptics. Dillinger are CRAZY ! I've seen em before
but this time they seemed to be extra nuts. The guitarist just
jumps off walls, and swings his guitar like a madman, always almost
hitting another band member. During certain parts of the set house
lights would go on and it was crazy to see all the maddess. Their
new singer was really great, AMAZING ENERGY . He jumps up on top
of the Irving Plaza speakers, flung himslef into the crowd ( twice
) . Flopped like a fish . I must saw this was my 3rd time seeing
Dillinger and they were WAY better then I'd ever had seen them..new
singer kicked ass.
They play all the songs from Irony is a Dead Scene..and he did
all the Patton parts really well. Impressive.
Finally at the end of the set he said " Ladies and Gentlemen,
Mr. Mike Patton " . Patton came out and gave a " how do i follow
that" look . Needless to say the crowd was nuts. They went
into " Come to Daddy " and Mike went off.... not having to play
a keyboard, no fiddling with pedals..just CRAZY jumping around,
and screaming ..they played until Dillinger just destroyed their
guitars. Amazing.
Whew.
After
that, alot of the hardcore kids moved out, and us hardcore Patton
fans moved in..
Around
11 Tomahawk came out dessed as cops, and Patton had the always
fashionable hairnet and used the gasmask mic thing... AWESOME
! LOTS of energy Dont remember the set list exactly, but they
played moslty everything , plus the covers and 2 new songs. They
also did extended improv jams with Mike doing his crazy vocal
stuff. They played amazingly...some funny notes:
-He said " we were really sweet for a bunch of hillbillys" , and
that it was their day off and they were glad that people liked
them.
-Asked
some guy why we didnt go to Slayer tonight ( who was playing uptown
) . Then Patton said, "Cause your a faggott ", crowd laughed..then
He said he was kidding, and said something like,"dont worry, they
still love me" - Metioned they were opening for Tool ( cheers
) , Then he said " why are you cheering? " You should be booing
, then the crowd booed, Tomahawk smiled.
-Kevin hit a really bad note, and Mike gave him a look, then Kevin
flipped Mike the bird , Patton smiled .
-John
smiled during the whole, looked to be having fun, and he wore
a cop hat as well.
-
Mike introduced the band , Kevin: " likes double penatration and
spreading stds". Duane: " Enjoys whisky..and getting his hair
cut like an old chinnese man ? ", John: " a man that personifies
NYC and unlike Frank he loooooves to eat pussy "
-
During Angel Eyes ( I think last song before encore ) people started
lighting their lighters. Patton said something like " damn straight
muther fucker " To someone with a lighter upfront , but not into
the mic "
Overall
really REALLY great show, TONS of enegrey, I think Tomahawk was
getting off on a crowd that actually liked them alot. Lots of
people sang along..and generally it was great, Might be my favorite
Patton show. Like Mike said " see you later ..Halloween !" Cant
wait !
(-love,
Matt)
