BOOKENDS!
That's the way to do a week. Bookend it with 2 awesome shows,
and if your lucky enough to live in NY you get to see the mighty
Mike Patton play around with fellow musical terrorists. The week
started with an early set at John Zorn's Tonic Club. It's a small
hole in the wall dive in NY's downtown. I got online around 730
and waited with fellow Patton nuts to see him do something with
Zorn, and electronic bleep guru Iku Mori. I'm gonna skip the whole
hour long wait and move onto the point where all three walked
through the mass of music geeks to take the stage. What followed
was roughly an hour long set of screaming and other vocal contortions
by Patton mixed with Zorn's almost absurd sax playing, peppered
with Mori's ever present laptop pumping out carefully crafted
digital bursts. It's hard to describe the set
but it was
improve at its weirdest and most fun. It's almost impossible to
describe, so I'll stop and just say if you have the chance to
see these three tweak out on stage together
go.
I
finished the week off with what may be the BEST concert of 2003.
Mike Patton and The Roots own Human beat box Razhel. This show's
was CLASSIC! Un-fucking-believable. Razhel makes sounds that no
human can possibly do. It leads me to believe that he may in fact
be a robot from planet X or more plausibly an alien. Patton had
all his boxes and effects and was as "hip hop" and mainstream
(if that's possible) as he could get in an improvised set of twin
vocal blasts. I was rolling 8 deep and all at the show LOVED it.
This was just for the geeks, everyone will smile and fucking lose
their shit over the performance. If there's a God these 2 will
release an album soon.
