Mad Deerhoof info, news, etc. from Greg Saunier - posted below:
Hi Everyone!
We've been overwhelmed with joy at all the interest in FRIEND OPPORTUNITY! And at the same time Kill Rock Stars has been biting their nails over all the leaks! Now that "+81" is officially available online (itunes, emusic, napster...), we thought we sort of owed you a thank you and an apology - just for you bloggers, here's "+81" -- http://www.krs5rc.com/deerhoof/81.mp3 -- plus a small holiday something -- http://www.krs5rc.com/deerhoof/TheLittleDrummerBoy.mp3 -- a token of our appreciation for your enthusiasm and your patience!
This summer we worked on the soundtrack for Justin Theroux's amazing directorial debut, called DEDICATION. (It is premiering at Sundance on January 22, right at the same time as our album is coming out.) Justin asked us to make a version of "Little Drummer Boy" for one scene, and it really worked well, but then his producers discovered that this is one of those songs like "Happy Birthday". If you use it in a movie you have to pay 5 figures to some estate somewhere, so he had to can it. Now it's yours!
Today we're also releasing "+81" online as an EP with several B-sides. Since Deerhoof has gone back to being just Satomi, John and me, and the last time it was just us three was in 2002 when we put out REVEILLE, we thought it would be fun to present a few of the songs from that time that didn't end up on the album. So these are the B-sides:
"Sealed With A Kiss" might sound familiar if you know our album "Apple O'", where we made a different version of it using only samples made from songs about apples. Or you might even know THIS version if you bought "Azadi", the benefit comp for the REVOLUTIONARY ASSOCIATION OF THE WOMEN OF AFGHANISTAN, where the song was called "Bring Down The Nutritious Pigs".
"Surprise Symphony" was meant to be a Deerhoof cover of the opening of the famous HAYDN symphony, but to me it sounds more like a ripoff of "Strawberry Letter #22" by THE BROTHERS JOHNSON.
I'm pretty sure "United He-Ho Brothers" was the very first thing the three of us wrote when John joined the band in 1999. In the lyrics Satomi gives a shout out to "SEAN NA NA" who was our labelmate at the time, and has since transformed into HAR MAR SUPERSTAR.
"Aho Bomb", though it never came out on any album, was in our live repertoire for a while, and once we played it in LA at The Smell, opening for SCARNELLA (NELS CLINE and CARLA BOZULICH). I'm proud to say that this was Nel's favorite Deerhoof song, and talking to him later we figured out that several years later he wrote his song "Suspended Head" (from his album THE GIANT PIN) by trying to remember what "Aho Bomb" sounded like from that
show.
Now, when FRIEND OPPORTUNITY comes out we're going on tour, and I'm very excited to tell you that big chunks of this tour are going to be alongside BUSDRIVER, whose own new album ROADKILLOVERCOAT comes out right after ours, January 30 on Anti. Busdriver and Deerhoof ended up on the Be The Riottt! Festival in San Francisco together last month. We went to see Busdriver and were instantly converted. When we went to his merch table to discuss our newfound adoration, he says he loves Deerhoof and has all our albums! Immediately we invite him to come do guest vocals on "Gore In Rut" later that night, and he takes that opportunity to do the following:

Our favorite Pete Doherty has said the best thing about Carl Barat was the crack he could score; further that Dirty Pretty Things is crap compared to Babyshambles. Yeah!

Once Roadrunner Records was cool and released good records. Then a Roadrunner signed a number of bands that sucked and they started to suck hard. In the latest news, Warner Brothers has bought Roadrunner for $73 million and a bottle of Jager.

Grammy Shammy! It seems each year the Grammy nominees are more and more about superficial pop. Just because a record sold alot of copies doesn't make it good. However, there is a little redeeming quality in the narrow targeted rock categories, but only if the band was on a major label (all of a sudden Death Cab fits in). You can check it all out here.

The Rolling Stones current tour A Bigger Bang is officially the highest grossing tour with currently $437 million, surpassing U2's Vertigo Tour. RS might add to this number in 2007. But, this is hiding info like the fact that RS take time off between shows for various things like brain surgery, so it's only vaguely continuous.
-----
The Eagles of Death Metal have dropped off supporting Guns N' Roses after only one show due to the crowd's reaction and Axl Rose's comments. The best though is Jesse Hughes' statement about dropping off:
At first the audience refused to welcome us to the jungle, but by the time we took our final bow, it had become paradise city. Although Axl tried to November rain on our parade, no sweet child o' mine can derail the EODM night train. We say live and let die.

Dischord Records is offering free recording time at the quasi-famous Inner Ear Studios, Ruffian Records, and Swim-Two-Birds Studio for startup DC-area bands under the DC Free Recordings Project.
