Apparently, 311 and former Creed singer Scott Stapp got into a brawl in Baltimore last week. Stapp walked in like 'I'm all Christian and shit, and this is what Jesus would do' and then bunched dudes in 311. Stapp also tried to use his bling cross to stab them. 311 said they smoked him.

Week of 11/21

Sunset Rubdown has signed with Berkeley, CA's Absolutely Kosher Records after just recently releasing Snake's Got A Leg on Global Symphonic. While a strong band on their own, Sunset Rubdown gets extra attention for band member Spencer Krug playing in Wolf Parade.

-----

From Victory:

Shane Told, frontman for Canada's Silverstein, has started Verona Records.  "I've started a label not as a business venture, or to gain anything for myself. I see amazingly talented bands all over the world, and so many of them have no direction on what to do on the business side of things. I've started this label to guide these bands in the right direction, and help provide them with the finances they need to really give themselves the best shot at playing music full time."

The first signing is Dead and Divine, from Told's hometown of Oakville, Ontario, and for those expecting them to sound like Silverstein, think again. "This band is VERY metal, he says. And super talented. I saw so much potential in these guys, that I asked them if I could put out their record." Their debut release comes out November 29th.

You want more music awards? Then you got it. The PLUG Awards are currently ongoing with ordinary dudes like you and me voting for bands nominated by hipsters in the industry. The downside is that the same bands are nominated for like a million categories - so all have to win by process of elimination. Also, there are some strange nominations - like Plot to Blow Up as one of the best punk albums? Are you retard? You want to vote.

Bayside getting back to getting back:

The tragic accident early Halloween morning that took the life of Bayside drummer John “Beatz” Holoran and seriously injured bassist Nick Ghanbarian was devastating to the band, their families and friends. After spending the past two weeks mourning their losses, singer/guitarist Anthony Raneri and guitarist Jack O’Shea will be rejoining the Never Sleep Again Tour tonight in St. Petersburg, Florida at Jannus Landing.  “The outpouring of support from the public has been incredible”, said singer/guitarist Anthony Raneri, “we really appreciate the donations and massive amount of mail from fans sharing their sorrow over the loss of John. It’s amazing to know how many lives he touched.” Raneri and O’Shea will perform on acoustic guitars for the remainder of the tour – their prowess in this format was documented on their current, self-titled album, with the song, “Don’t Call Me Peanut”.

The Never Sleep Again Tour presents some of Victory Record’s hottest acts, with powerhouse Hawthorne Heights headlining and Silverstein and Aiden joining Bayside for an incredible night of music. The solidarity between these bands was illustrated after Holoran’s death, when each member of the tour got commemorative tattoos with Bayside’s bird logo.  For more information about the Never Sleep Again Tour visit http://www.victorylive.com/neversleepagain/ or contact me for tickets or to arrange coverage of these great bands.

As a follow up to the below, Sony Music has decided to recall all those XCP CDs (now they are a real American company like Ford) and give you a backrub. But will they buy you all new computers for their errors, only if you like Yugos. On an even eviler note, Sony plans to copy protect all of their CDs by next year.

-----

Sony Music - the massive music label that owns all these smaller labels that you don't realize - has been trying to destroy your computer and your life. And now they want to make it worse. Sony was putting this anti-piracy software XCP on CDs so you can't act like you were in China and started a piracy business. But it turns out this software installs all this spyware on your computer and leaves it vulnerable to viruses and molesting by the man. So, Sony was getting flack and gave you option to take it off, but then apparently this option actually may fuck up your computer worse. There is class-action lawsuit in California, but the weird German guy at the head of the music section says that everything is cool as a moose and Sony are just good people. Microsoft is going to try to help us little people out, which actually may work out. We just realized that we have gotten a bunch of CDs with the technology to review - so if Sony fucked up our computers, I will personally go and fuck them up. Below is a list of some CDs known with the technology:

Trey Anastasio, Shine (Columbia)
Celine Dion, On ne Change Pas (Epic)
Neil Diamond, 12 Songs (Columbia)
Our Lady Peace, Healthy in Paranoid Times (Columbia)
Chris Botti, To Love Again (Columbia)
Van Zant, Get Right with the Man (Columbia)
Switchfoot, Nothing is Sound (Columbia)
The Coral, The Invisible Invasion (Columbia)
Acceptance, Phantoms (Columbia)
Susie Suh, Susie Suh (Epic)
Amerie, Touch (Columbia)
Life of Agony, Broken Valley (Epic)
Horace Silver Quintet, Silver's Blue (Epic Legacy)
Gerry Mulligan, Jeru (Columbia Legacy)
Dexter Gordon, Manhattan Symphonie (Columbia Legacy)
The Bad Plus, Suspicious Activity (Columbia)
The Dead 60s, The Dead 60s (Epic)
Dion, The Essential Dion (Columbia Legacy)
Natasha Bedingfield, Unwritten (Epic)
Ricky Martin, Life (Columbia)

Also, possibly these:

My Morning Jacket, Z
Santana, All That I Am
Sarah McLachlan, Bloom Remix Album

More absurdness from Pat Robertson:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Conservative Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson told citizens of a Pennsylvania town that they had rejected God by voting their school board out of office for supporting "intelligent design" and warned them Thursday not to be surprised if disaster struck.

-----

From Billboard.com:

The new 50 Cent movie "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" has been pulled from a Homestead, Pa., theater where a man was fatally shot even though officials said they do not know whether the film was a factor in the slaying.

Loews Corp. decided to stop showing the rapper's bullet-ridden bio while the investigation is going on, said John McCauley, the company's vice president of marketing. "We're unclear whether there is a direct connection," McCauley said.

He said the company is doing all it can to make sure patrons are safe at the 22-screen multiplex in a popular entertainment-and-shopping complex just east of Pittsburgh.

Shelton Flowers, 30, had just watched the rapper's movie Wednesday when he got into a confrontation with three men in the bathroom. A fight ensued and spilled out into the concessions area, where Flowers was shot, police said. Authorities were looking for witnesses, and no suspects were immediately arrested.

From Nasty:

BEASTIE BOYS
"AWESOME: I F**KIN' SHOT THAT!"
Debut Feature Film Shot By Audience Members
Set For Spring 2006 Release
Solid Gold Hits Compendium In Stores Nov. 8

Beastie Boys have announced the completion of AWESOME: I F**KIN' SHOT THAT!, the band's debut feature theatrical film. Directed by longtime Beastie Boys collaborator Nathaniel Hornblower and produced by Hornblower and Jon Doran, AWESOME: I F**KIN' SHOT THAT! will be released worldwide by THINKFilm in Spring 2006 following significant festival presentations early next year.

AWESOME: I F**KIN' SHOT THAT! is a first not only for Beastie Boys, but for the entire concert film genre: A feature film shot by audience members. On October 9, 2004, Beastie Boys handed out 50 cameras to audience members at their sold-out performance in New York's famed Madison Square Garden. These 50 different passionate perspectives shot from the point-of-view of the audience take the viewer deep inside the world of a live Beastie Boys show, capturing the experience from a variety of perspectives in a way no film has ever done.

While Beastie Boys Mike D (Michael Diamond), Adrock (Adam Horovitz) and MCA (Adam Yauch) star in AWESOME... the film was photographed, as Yauch says, by "a bunch of untrained camera operators. But that gives the film sincerity. The people that shot it were feeling it."

"'Awesome' is the only word that can describe the experience of watching this film," says THINK theatrical division head Mark Urman. "It's totally modern and witty aesthetically, but also fabulous to watch and listen to." Sackman adds, "We have been pursuing this film aggressively since we first read about it and think that Adam, Jon, and the rest of their team at Oscilloscope Films are the equal of any filmmaking team we've worked with when it comes to having a vision and realizing it to its best and fullest potential." Yauch added "I'm glad that the film has found a home with THINK. S**t has been bubbling for a minute and now THINK is gonna light a match."

As documented on the Solid Gold Hits being released by Capitol this week, Beastie Boys have enjoyed arguably the longest-running career in hip hop, spanning from their 9-million-selling 1986 album Licensed to Ill through the critically acclaimed and multi-platinum Paul's Boutique (1989) and Check Your Head (1992) through their recent trifecta of #1 albums, Ill Communication (1994), Hello Nasty (1998) and To The 5 Boroughs (2004). In 2000 a two-DVD anthology of the band's visual work-including such as Hornblower-directed works as "Intergalactic," "Body Movin'," "Alive" and others--was released by the Criterion Collection. It remains the only music-video anthology released by the noted archival brand. An AWESOME: I F**KIN' SHOT THAT! DVD is slated for release through THINKFilm next summer.

In another rough week for drummers, Japanese-noise rock kings DMBQ's drummer Mana "China" Nishiura was killed in a van accident on the New Jersey Turnpike. Besides from rocking DMBQ, China also pelted the skins for everyone's favorite Shonen Knife. The other members of the band were injured, but not severly. Not to make light of the situation, but if I was a drummer in band on tour, I'd wear some pads and a helmet when traveling.

Week of 10/31

Two follow-up statements to Bayside's accident:

Anthony Raneri of Bayside talks about the events of October 31st, and their plans for the future:

The worst day of my life is over. It lasted 72 hours, but it's over. I know now that everyday for the rest of my life will be a piece of cake to wake up to, I'm just glad that I get to wake up to them. On Halloween I lost my best friend, big brother, mentor and band mate. I find a lot of comfort in knowing that I had a best friend, big brother, mentor and band mate in the first place, when so many people will never know what it is like to have someone as magical as Beatz in their lives. I'm so lucky for that and so lucky that I survived this thing to tell everyone about him. Anyone that knew Beatz fell in love with him instantly. Whether you were his brother, his wife, his friend or you met him for five minutes. This letter, this week and the rest of my life is not going to be a mourning of a lost life, but a celebration of a wonderful one. He will live forever in all of our hearts and in the music he created so passionately.

On behalf of Bayside, everyone in the Bayside/Victory camp and the Holohan clan, I thank you all so much for your support through all of this. I have to thank the members of Hawthorne Heights, Silverstein and Aiden, all of their crews, everyone at Victory, our manager Nate Albert and our families and friends for everything they have done since the second this happened, to get us past the last few days. Our guitar tech Nicky Raneri, tour manager Scott Robinson, guitar player Jack O'Shea and I are all home safe. Nick is going into surgery in a couple of hours and will make a full recovery; our drum tech Dan Marino is out of surgery and we hope to get him home by the end of the week. Every one of the fans, the press and any other company or person that has gotten in touch with us has just been amazing and it's all that support that got us through this.

On November 16th, Jack and I will be flying out to St Petersburg, FL to join up with the Never Sleep Again Tour. We will be playing an acoustic set that night and every night through the end of the tour on December 11th. We loved this tour. Beatz loved this tour and this is something that we need to do for ourselves, for our band and for John Beatz, who would kick my ass if I didn't finish up what he gave his life for. After that, we will be taking the holidays off, as planned, and then getting back on the road again as a band in 2006. Aside from the next two weeks, we can not let this situation slow our band down or cancel one more show or tour. All any of us ever wanted to do was play music and make this band into something that people would know and love. That hasn't changed and we can't let it. Beatz wouldn't have it any other way.

It will take me a long time to get the horrible images from that night out of my head and it will take some time for my friends Nick and Dan to get their asses out of bed, but I will, and they will and life will move on with only the happier memories of my best friend.

Thank you all for your support. The whole Bayside camp and the Holohan family are living on it right now. Please look into the John Holohan Memorial Fund. It's not about money; it's the thought that counts. For all of us and his family to know that he made a huge impact on the world is all we have right now.

Thank You,

Anthony Raneri & Bayside

A statement from Nick Ghanbarian, bassist in Bayside:

I'm laying here in the hospital, awaiting my surgery tomorrow. To clear up any questions, I broke my back ( L4 vertebrae ). I'm very lucky to not be paralyzed. I was thrown through the window of our rolling van, after hitting a patch of ice. I have a full torso cast on, keeping my back straight. I just started eating again so now I can take some percoset which helps with my intense back pain. All in all, Ill be ok and the minute I can have a bass in my hand and be playing in front of people again I will. It’s all I know how to do and the only thing that makes me happy.

Once hearing about all of the support from friends, bands and fans, my spirits where immediately uplifted. All we have in this world are each other, and in times of tragedy, you find out who is by your side until the end and who is bullshit. Thankfully our music community surrounds us by mostly heartfelt people who are going out of their way to help us in our time of need and to help us keep our dream alive.

John Beatz was someone I looked up to, yet I walked beside him as a contemporary. I learned from him as he learned from me. We started playing in bayside 14 months ago and have both realized that our whole lives had been lived to get us to this point, so we spent the time working our asses off and making sure that that this band was going to succeed in what we wanted: having people hear our music.

With his passing, we realize he paid the ultimate price as all of us would have or else we wouldn't have been beside him. We live for rock and roll and when you believe in something enough, sometimes you die for it.

What I want everyone out there to realize is the sacrifice every member of every touring band makes. Safety, money, health etc. All of these things are a distant second to our music. People get vans, trailers, equipment and other personal items stolen, we play in unsafe neighborhoods, we travel far distances in sometimes unsafe vehicles and unsafe weather. My point in all of this is that we are a community, not a business. Support and understanding with an open mind are what's most important in our lives. Not record sales. Whether or not you like a band you must realize that bands are giving their all for what they love, including their lives. Showing your faces at shows and talking to us and letting us know you appreciate the music and the hard work is infinitely more important than the business side of things.

I'm happy to have my life, I'm happy to have known John and I'm happy to still have a band. Please give your time and respects to John’s family and wife. All he ever did was speak of her, and every ounce of energy he put into his life was for her. Hopefully we can all have love like that in our lifetime.

See you all soon

Nick

The release of Vaux's next record Beyond Virtue, Beyond Vice has been suspended indefinitely. The record was going to be the band's major label debut on Atlantic. But, after some management changes and the usual bullshit, Atlantic decided to shelve it. It still baffles me why a label would pay for a record to be made and then not release it. Vaux is working to get the rights to the record back from Atlantic.

This bares repeating or posting:

E-mail from FEMA Director Brown's Press Secretary to Marty Bahamonde, FEMA regional director stationed in the Superdome, August 31:

"Also, it is very important that time is allowed for Mr. Brown to eat dinner. Gievn (sic) that Baton Rouge is back to normal, restaurants are getting busy. He needs much more that (sic) 20 or 30 minutes. We now have traffic to encounter to get to and from a location of his choise (sic), followed by wait service from the restaurant staff, eating, etc.

response e-mail from Bahamonde:

"Just tell her that I just ate an MRE and crapped in the hallway of the Superdome along with 30,000 other close friends so I understand her concern about busy restaurants. Maybe tonight I will have time to move my pebbles on the parking garage floor so they don't stab me in the back while I try to sleep."

Hey everyone-Travis from The Goodwill here. I just wanted to let everyone know that we have decided to part ways with vocalist Brian Barbuto. This decision did not come easy but we knew it was the right decision to make. There are incredible 'things' just around the corner for The Goodwill. We are extremely excited to share this with all of you when that time comes. So until then, thanks again to everyone who has been sharing this incredible journey with us; but keep in mind that you haven't seen a damn thing just yet!

We are in fact in search of a lead vocalist/frontman. If you think you have what it takes, please read below and email us at: SingForTheGoodwill@hotmail.com

In some non-music related news, this past weekend UNC scored the number one rated power forward in the class of 2006, Brandan Wright. Most scouts believed that UNC would not get Wright after securing Deon Thompson (no. 3 center) and Alex Stepheson (no. 13 center). Now Carolina has the number one rated 2006 prospects for point guard, shooting guard and power forward. The verbal commits, including Wright, Thompson and Stepheson, are Tywon Lawson (no. 1 pg), Wayne Ellington (no. 1 sg) and William Graves (wf). They can officially committ in the early signing period beginning on November 9th. Save for competition from Ohio State's stacked 2006 class (um, man-child Greg Odgen), many believe UNC's class is one of the best in the past decade.

Naturally, it is too bad these guys couldn't help this year's team - though we expect good things from Tyler Hansborough, Danny Green, Bobby Frasor, Marcus Ginyard and Michael Copeland in the upcoming months.

Week of 10/10

-----

Victory brethens June and the Junior Varsity will be doing an acoustic in-store show at Scotti's Record Shop in Gilette, NJ on October 14th at 3pm. This is just in time for the kids to get out of school and then after you get a free shave (as everyone does in Gilette, NJ, right?).

-----

Outkast will be releasing their new record Idlewild on December 6th and it serves as the soundtrack to their new film by the same name. Let your imagination run at the possible sounds.

We are very interested in the Maria Taylor-Andy LeMaster combo.

Favorite indie rock heart-throb Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley is set release her debut solo record entitled Rabbit Fur Coat on Conor Oberst's Team Love label during the winter. We for one, can't wait!

Week of 9/12

One of two non-music related news items this week is that Ultramarathon Man Dean Karnazes will be attempting to run 300 miles consecutively (that is, without stopping) at the 2005 Saturn Relay Race. After running 262 miles (10 marathons) during this race last year, Dean will be reaching for a new record at 300. To read the press release on this click here!

-----

The other non-music item deals with another athletic individual. The phenomenally-tall Sun Ming Ming (7'8") is asking for help for paying for surgery for a possibly life-threatening brain tumor - that is partially the cause for his height. Sun came to our attention during the lead up to the 2005 NBA Draft as he tried out for NBA teams. The belief is that with the removal of the tumor, Sun will a. be alive and b. be able to play in the NBA, thus making him the tallest player ever. There is a website set up to help at www.savesunmingming.com. We posted some photos of Sun in the appropiately-titled Crazy section of this site.

-----

Cave In is setting out in support of the new album Perfect Pitch Black (Hydra Head), an album reportedly to draw more on their early metal awesomeness (can anyone say fucking "Crossbearer") and less on the I'm-more-spacey-than-though. Below are the dates:

The LP is being released by KRS & Jealous Butcher.

-----

T.A.T.U. news? The Russian pseudo-lesbian duo is about to release a new album entitled Dangerous and Moving on October 11. Even stranger is that Sting and Richard Carpenter make guest appearances.

-----

Week of 9/5

Cursive reports that super-fab stringmaster Gretta Cohn has said goodbye to the group and headed back to NYC to rock her own mic. Maybe she could meet up with Conor and do her thing?

-----

The Gorillaz are going to do a world tour as 3-D holograms - that's fucking cool.

-----

CMJ is gearing up and we could care less. Why can't there be a cool musical festival where only a few people show up, or at least you could be able to get into the shows you want to.
