Andrew Bird
@ The Pageant, St. Louis, MO
4/17/07
Coming to the show on the heed of the advice of a friend and a rather convincing set of online mp3s, I had no idea what to expect from Andrew Bird. Specifically, whether Bird could keep the almost entirely uninitiated focused on his show instead of being bored by songs they’ve never heard. With a crackpot duo behind him, Bird dazzled the quiet Pageant crowd with an unquestionably tight and polished show that emphasized material off his new record – Armchair Apocrypha – during the hour and forty-five minute set. That’s right, an HOUR AND FORTY-FIVE minutes. That last time I saw a band play that long it was Slayer in 1998 and I faded quickly during their two-plus hour show. Yet, Bird simply kept the interest alive by running through songs such as the brilliant “Heretics,” “Fiery Crash,” “A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left,” and “Imitosis” with no shoes on and myriad of instruments and sounds. The gaggle of hardcore Bird fans at the Pageant can fill you in on the others. Currently, I’m advising all my clients to get into Andrew Bird.
