The
Get Up Kids, The Anniversary, Koufax and Jebediah
@ Cat's Cradle, Carrboro, NC
9/29/00
Well
to start I don't have much to say about Jebediah because I got
there too late. Sorry to all the Jebediah fans where ever you
may be (the Patriot?). Koufax from Detroit were good, playing
that synth indie pop stuff that is mildly pleasing to the ear.
The friend Neil was dragging down the show because the songs were
too slow and involved more than the three chords punk shows that
we go to. By the time The Anniversary (Villains & Heroes Records)
came on the stage the club was packed with honeys and gentleman.
At this point I knew that the show would get good. The Anniversary
came out to some strange music; actually I think it was just Carl
Orf's (sp.) monk music of death and sex. They rocked. They had
multitude of singers including a girl you sang many of the songs
and played keyboards. Very impressive. These folks from Lawrence,
Kansas could really put on a show. While we were waiting for the
Get Up Kids (Vagrant/Villains & Heroes Records), we thought
of picking up the drunk punk rock girls who were drinking Pabst.
Then we though 'naw too easy.' We need a real challenge like the
Eyeliners (see previous review). So skeptical Neil came close
with me for the Kids. They opened with "Valentine" off
their newest album Something to Write Home, at which point the
Neil told me 'wow these guys are good.' Oh yes, there were, are
and will be good. No, great. The Kids proceeded to kick the shit
out of every band that ever crossed the stage, seriously. They
played a mix of slow and fast songs off of all their releases.
For first time in the South, I saw a crowd that was actually into
the band and the music and weren't interested in keeping the tobacco
industry in business (cough). One of there last songs was "10
Minutes" which has been known to give you the chills, not
unlike rubbing the belly of Boss Hog. At the end of the show I
know why the Get Up Kids had a big fancy bus and most other bands
have a van like Stang.
Highlights of the show: The Anniversary's voodoo-esque dolls of
themselves, strangely bizarre. Having the poster's I put up for
the Jazz June/Elliott show ripped off the wall by overzealous
high school kids. Watching a girl collapse due to too much alcohol.
[Unfortunately, these bands mostly had men in the band so we were
not able to hit on the women rockers. Next time.]
