Boy Least Likely To
@ R&R, NYC
3/11/06
I love The Boy Least Likely To. Great poppy sounds. The lyrics are quite
nice - one of only a few bands that I enjoy especially for the lyrics. For
instance, in Monsters, "And the thing that really frightens me, Is that all
my friends from school, Are turning into monsters, Picking patterns out for
curtains, Making friends with all the other monsters, Pushing little baby
monsters, Around the shops in prams." Awesome.
Anyway, while in New York, I lucked out and was able to see one of the band'
s only main-act performances in the U.S. (I could have seen them open for
VH1 superstar James Blunt in Denver, but, yeah.) Waiting for the show to
start was torturous - the room was uncomfortably packed, hot, and the person
wearing the moose hat next to me kept ramming her elbow in my side. The
show started quite late, and the sound at the beginning was poor.
But after a few songs, the sound was adjusted and the rest of the
performance was very fun and very enjoyable. The playlist was essentially
their album, with the B-side Rock Upon a Porch With You" added in. They
might be better as an opening act, given their limited repertoire. As an
encore, the band ended up playing a song they had already performed earlier
in the night.
Even though one of the lead singers resembled the guy from grad school that
we always worried would go postal, the band was lively and enthusiastic.
Even with the sound problems, crappy venue, and short show, it was still a
good time, which says a lot for the band and their performance.
